Stress and anxiety have become unavoidable companions in our fast-paced, hyper-connected world. Whether it’s meeting deadlines at work, juggling personal responsibilities, or coping with uncertainty, these challenges often leave us feeling overwhelmed and depleted. But what if there was a natural, ancient system that addressed not just the symptoms of stress but its very root cause? Enter Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old system of holistic healing that views wellness as a balance of mind, body, and spirit.
In this blog, I’ll explore how Ayurveda understands and treats stress and anxiety, share insights into my unique approach to healing, and offer practical, accessible remedies you can start using today.

Understanding Stress and Anxiety in Ayurveda
Ayurveda categorizes stress and anxiety as imbalances in the Vata dosha, the energy associated with air and space. Vata governs movement, thought, and communication, and when it is out of balance, it can lead to restlessness, worry, and difficulty focusing. Think of an overactive mind, like a leaf caught in the wind, unable to settle.
Stress can also affect the Pitta dosha (fire and water), especially when it’s driven by ambition or perfectionism, leading to irritability, frustration, and burnout. Meanwhile, a prolonged state of stress may disrupt Kapha dosha (earth and water), resulting in lethargy or emotional heaviness.
Ayurveda doesn’t just look at symptoms; it examines the root causes of imbalance. This could be irregular routines, overstimulation, poor nutrition, or even unresolved emotional trauma.
My Approach: Personalized and Holistic Healing
In my consultations, I take a personalized approach to help clients uncover their dosha and identify stressors in their lifestyle. Together, we craft a plan that aligns with their natural rhythms, using tools such as:
Daily Routines (Dinacharya): Establishing consistency in sleep, meals, and mindfulness.
Sensory Healing: Incorporating soothing sights, sounds, and scents to calm the nervous system.
Nutrition: Guiding clients toward foods that pacify their dominant dosha.
I emphasize the healing power of simple, consistent practices that anyone can adopt, no matter how busy their life may be. Below, I’ll share some of my favorite stress-relief tips you can start using today.
Accessible Home Remedies for Stress and Anxiety
Ground Yourself with Warm Oil Massage (Abhyanga)
Warm some sesame oil and massage it onto your body before your shower or bath. This practice calms Vata dosha and creates a sense of stability. Focus on circular motions on joints and long strokes on limbs.
Breathe Away Anxiety
Practice Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) for 5–10 minutes daily. This technique balances the left and right hemispheres of the brain, calming the mind and reducing stress.
How to do it:
Close your right nostril with your thumb, inhale through the left nostril.
Close the left nostril with your ring finger, exhale through the right nostril.
Repeat on the other side.
Soothe Your Senses with Aromatherapy
Use calming essential oils like lavender or sandalwood in a diffuser or on your wrists. These scents directly impact the limbic system, helping to ease anxiety.
Create a Bedtime Ritual
End your day with a cup of golden milk (warm almond milk with a pinch of turmeric, a dash of cinnamon, and a bit of honey). This soothing drink helps stabilize Vata and promote restful sleep.
Eat Warm, Nourishing Foods
Avoid raw, cold, or dry foods when feeling stressed. Opt for simple, grounding meals like kitchari (a warm blend of rice and lentils) or soups with root vegetables to pacify Vata.
Take Nature Breaks
Spend time outdoors, especially in green spaces. Walking barefoot on grass or simply observing nature helps calm the overstimulated mind.
